Welcome to Pari-mutuel wagering.
Unlike casino wagering or lottery wagering, at the track the better wagers against all the other folks who are convinced that they each have the winner. Betters don't bet against the house, or the long odds of winning in a lottery. In pari-mutuel wagering, for example, if one bets on a horse to win in a race that offers nine horses on which to bet, the better has one chance in nine of emerging as a winner.
The fun of wagering challenges the better to check a horse's breeding, and its breeder. The better might also want to note the statistics on the owner, the trainer, and the rider or driver provided in the racing program relevant to their consistency and performance.
As a spectator and as a racing fan, betters obviously want to choose and subsequently bet on winners. So, working with the best horses, trainers, and jockeys or drivers often represents the best path to enjoyment. To reach that end, a novice better needs to learn the "ins and outs" of the standard daily racing program. Weighing the differences in distance, class and time is a must for the seasoned better.
